Two events this week round out Gustavus’s campus-wide Global Insight Program, which has, over the course of the 2011-2012 academic year, focused on the world’s Circumpolar Region.
Events throughout the month of May center on Sweden’s northern periphery, and the program will close with a film this evening and a lecture tomorrow late afternoon.
Wednesday, May 9: FILM: Jägarna (The Hunters), 7:00 p.m., Confer 128
A 1996 Swedish thriller directed by Kjell Sundvall. A police officer from Stockholm moves back to his hometown in northern Sweden. He starts to work on a long-running case where reindeer have been poached and soon discovers that his brother is involved.
A rather brutal and tough film (including violence against women), the film has excellent acting and stunning cinematography. The movie was a tremendous success in Sweden and Scandinavia. It received two Guldbagge Awards for Best Direction (Kjell Sundvall) and Best Supporting Actor (Lennart Jähkel).
Thursday, May 10: PRESENTATION: “Margin as Meeting Place: Arctic Imaginary and Polar Reality in Northern Sweden,” 4:00 p.m., Confer 128
The final lecture on the Circumpolar Region for this year will be presented by Dr. Suzanne Martin, Director of the Scandinavian Program at Minnesota State University, Mankato.
