The Department of Scandinavian Studies welcomes Out of Scandinavia Artist in Residence Jonas Hassen Khemiri to campus the week of April 30th. In addition to being part of this year’s MAYDAY! conference on “Multicultural Sweden,” Khemiri will visit classes in the Departments of Scandinavian Studies and English and be part of three other events, all open to the public:
Monday, April 30th, 7:00 p.m., 101 Beck Hall: “Writing and Translating Montecore.” Join Jonas Hassen Khemiri and translator Rachel Willson-Broyles for a talk on Khemiri’s novel Montecore and the challenges of translating it into English.
Tuesday, May 1st, 8:00 p.m., Black Box Theater: “Montecore — A Reading.” With Gustavus Professor of Theater and Dance Henry MacCarthy and Robert O. Berdahl of the Guthrie Theater, Minneapolis.
Wednesday, May 2nd, 7:00 p.m., American-Swedish Institute: Khemiri and Willson-Broyles will present their talk “Writing and Translating Montecore” at the ASI in Minneapolis.
Born in Sweden in 1978, Khemiri is the author of two novels — Ett öga rött [One Eye Red], and Montecore: en unik tiger [Montecore] — as well as a collection of plays and short stories. He has won several literary awards, including the Swedish Radio Award for best novel of the year and the PO Enquist Literary Prize for the most promising young European writer. He currently divides his time between Stockholm and Berlin. The English translation of his novel, Montecore, was published by Knopf in 2011, and his play INVASION! was recently awarded an Obie for its Off-Broadway performance.
